When you owe taxes, the IRS commonly sends parcel post and certified letters threatening to apply penalties and interest. Later they threaten to take your paycheck directly from your employer, seize your bank account, place a lien on or seize your home or other property. These are not hollow threats. They have the power to do all of these things. Unfortunately, many taxpayers don't call for help until the midnight hour!
