IRS Levy

An IRS levy is a legal seizure of property to satisfy tax debt. It is different from a federal tax lien: a lien is a legal claim securing the government’s interest, while a levy can actually take property or funds.

Do not ignore a levy notice

Levy action usually follows assessment, billing and formal notice procedures. If a notice includes a deadline or hearing right, review it promptly. Bank accounts, wages and certain other property can be affected depending on the circumstances.

The next step depends on the account

A payment arrangement, hardship request, appeal, release request or another response may be appropriate depending on timing, compliance and ability to pay.
